Panel on Turkey’s Place in Europe and the World

INSITER Coordinator Ebru Turhan discussed together with Sinan Ülgen (EDAM) and Piotr Zalewski (The Economist) the current state of play in EU -Turkey relations at a panel titled “Turkey in Today’s World Map” on 17 February 2018 at TÜSIAD headquarters in Istanbul. The panel was organized by the Alumni network of Turkey Europe Future Forum.  The panel was chaired by James Rizzo (Stiftung Mercator). Throughout her speech Turhan particularly focused on the key drivers of recent bilateral dialogue, Germany’s role in the formation of the relations between Turkey and the EU and on the future institutional architecture of EU-Turkey affairs.

 

INSITER Seminar Started

 On February 7, 2018, the first session of the INSITER seminar “Contemporary EU-Turkey Relations” took place. The course was added to the Turkish-German University’s MA programme “European and International Affairs” as a new teaching offer (seminar code ‘AVU114’) last year in the framework of the INSITER project. The seminar is conducted by the INSITER coordinator Asst. Prof. Dr. Ebru Turhan  and will take place every Wednesday afternoon. The full seminar syllabus can be found here.

 

 

New Publication by the INSITER Coordinator

INSITER Coordinator Ebru Turhan together with Dr. Yasar Aydin published a chapter titled “Deutschlands Rolle beim Flüchtlingsabkommen der Europäischen Union mit der Türkei – Eine Zäsur in der deutschen Türkei-Politik? in the edited volume  “Deutsch-türkische Beziehungen: Historische, sektorale und migrationsspezifische Aspekte” by Wolfgang Gieler, Burak Gümüş and Yunus Yoldaş (eds.).

INSITER Coordinator at the Izmir University of Economics

INSITER Coordinator Ebru Turhan was invited to Izmir University of Economics by Jean Monnet Professor Alexander Bürgin to hold a Jean Monnet Seminar. On 12 December 2017 Turhan gave a talk in Izmir on “Possibilities and Limitations of Differentiated Integration between Turkey and the EU.” More than 50 students and academics participated in the Jean Monnet Seminar at the Izmir University of Economics. The 1-hour presentation of Turhan was followed by a lively and interactive Q&A session.

INSITER-METU-TRIANGLE Roundtable in Ankara

In coordination with the Middle East Technical University (METU) and the TRIANGLE Project of the Center for Turkey and EU Studies (CETEUS) , INSITER organized INSITER-METU-TRIANGLE Roundtable titled “Germany and Turkey in Europe: Possibilities and Limitations of Cooperation and Conflict “ on November 13, 2017  in the premises of the METU in Ankara.

The Roundtable was chaired by Prof. Dr. Atila Eralp (METU / Turkish-German University and Istanbul Policy Center) and included contributions from Assoc. Prof. Dr. Özgehan Şenyuva (METU); Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dimitris Tsarouhas (Bilkent University); Asst. Prof. Dr. Ebru Turhan (Turkish-German University  / INSITER Coordinator) as panelists. Approximately 40 students and academics from METU, Bilken University and Turkish-German University participated in the roundtable.

2017 INSITER Study Visit to Ankara Successfully Finalized

On 13-14 November 2017 a study visit to Ankara was realized within the framework of the INSITER Jean Monnet Module. The INSITER delegation consisting of INSITER coordinator Ebru Turhan, INSITER senior staff member Atila Eralp and 15 MA students held talks with Ambassador Selim Yenel, Undersecretary at the Ministry of EU Affairs, Eray Akdağ, TÜSIAD Permanent Representative and Main Liaison to the Turkish Parliament, German Ambassador Martin Erdmann and Gabriel Munuera Vinals, Head of the European Union Turkey Delegation. The delegation also participated in a roundtable organized at the Middle East Technical University titled “Germany and Turkey in Europe: Possibilities and Limitations of Cooperation and Conflict”. The talks in Ankara mainly focused on the current status quo in EU-Turkey dialogue, Turkey’s EU accession process, German-Turkish political, economic and social relations, the Brexit process and the refugee crisis / EU-Turkey “deal”. The visit was also announced on the social media site of the German Embassy in Ankara.

INSITER Roundtable No. 2

On November 13, 2017, INSITER together with the Middle East Technical University (METU) and the TRIANGLE Project of the Center for Turkey and EU Studies (CETEUS)  will organise the INSITER-METU-TRIANGLE Roundtable “Germany and Turkey in Europe: Possibilities and Limitations of Cooperation and Conflict “.

The roundtable will take place at 1 pm in the premises of the METU in Ankara and bring together academics, students and civil society representatives focusing on EU/German-Turkish relations.

The roundtable will be chaired by Prof. Dr. Atila Eralp (METU / Turkish-German University and Istanbul Policy Center) and will include following speakers:

INSITER Project Presented to European Commission Delegation

On October 25, 2017, INSITER Coordinator Ebru Turhan presented the activities, publications and findings of the first year of the INSITER module to a delegation of the European Commission led by Martine Reicherts, Director-General of the DG Education & Culture of the European Commission at the Koç University within the framework of delegation’s 2-day visit to Turkey. Throughout her presentation Turhan particularly put emphasis on the positive impact of the Jean Monnet Module on efforts to making the Turkish-German University a hub for EU studies and analyses on EU-Turkey relations in Turkey and beyond. Turhan’s statement was also published in the anniversary book of the European Commission titled “From Erasmus to Erasmus+: A Story of 30 Years.
